CASTING CALLS



Find your place in the merry ol' land of Oz as the Downriver Youth Performing Arts Center holds auditions for its fall production of "The Wizard of Oz."

Auditions are set for 3 to 7 p.m. Sunday for ages 5 to 11, and from 6 to 9 p.m. Monday for ages 12 to 19 at the Trenton Village Theatre, 2447 W. Jefferson.

Children should be prepared to sing a song without a vocal track, either a song requiring sheet music without musical accompaniment or with a CD without a vocal track. It may be a very simple or an advanced song.

This will be a very large cast. Callbacks are set for 6 p.m. Wednesday.

Metro Shores Ballet and the Plymouth-Canton Ballet Company will hold auditions for its 2008-09 season tomorrow at the Grosse Ile Academy of Dance, 8205 Macomb St., and Sunday at Joanne's Dance Extension, 42020 Koppernick, Canton.

Auditions will take place at noon for ages 7 to 9, at 1 p.m. for ages 10 to 12 and at 2 p.m. for ages 13 to adult. The fee to audition is $10.

Dancers will be evaluated in a full-length ballet class. The class will consist of a warm-up at the barre and center work.

Selected dancers will be evaluated on their pointe work and partnering. Scholarships are available for boys.

All dancers should bring a dance photo and resume, which must include training and performance experience.

Girls must wear a black leotard, pink tights and ballet shoes. Teen and adult dancers should bring pointe shoes.

Boys must wear black tights or jazz pants, a white T-shirt and ballet shoes.

Rehearsals begin Sept. 2 and are held from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. Tuesdays at St. Alfred Catholic Church, 9500 Banner, Taylor.

Pint-sized performers are wanted for an upcoming ShowBiz Kidz/ShowBiz Starz production.

Performers ages 13 to 18 are needed for "Get Smart," a fast-paced comedy based on the popular TV series, running Oct. 17, 18, 24 and 25 at the Royal Majestic Theatre.

The play follows bumbling Maxwell Smart, Agent 86 of CONTROL, as he works on a bizarre new case to stop the sinister organization known as KAOS from their most shameful plot.

Auditions will run from 6 to 9 p.m. today. All auditions are at the Royal Majestic Theatre inside Trillium Academy, 15740 Racho Road, Taylor.

There are parts for 10 males and 17 females. Be prepared to do a cold reading from the script. A complete character listing and rehearsal schedule will be available at auditions.

If cast, performers must pay $100 tuition, payable in two installments, which includes a keepsake script and final cast party.

Rehearsals are from 3:30 to 6:30 p.m. Saturdays, starting tomorrow.

The Taylor Youth Theater will hold auditions for "A Holiday to Remember," highlighting music from around the world as well as hometown favorites, from 7 to 9:30 p.m. Tuesday through Thursday at the Activity Building in Heritage Park, 12111 Pardee, for ages 6 to 19.

Those auditioning should be prepared to sing a solo of their choice and learn a short dance routine. Bring sheet music or a karaoke CD. No a cappella singing will be allowed.

A sample CD is available at the Taylor Made for Recreation building, 22805 Goddard Road.

Show times are 7:30 p.m. Dec. 12 and 13 and 3 p.m. Dec. 14.

The Seaway Chorale and Orchestra will hold auditions for teens and adults in anticipation of its winter concert, "Jingle All the Way."

Tryouts for soprano, alto, tenor and bass parts are set for 7 p.m. Tuesday, 6:30 p.m. Sept. 2 and 6:30 p.m. Sept. 9 at Faith United Methodist Church, 2530 Charlton, Trenton.

Chorale director Mike Begian and two current chorale members will judge the auditions.

Singers can choose their own solo piece or sing music suggested by the chorale. Auditions last five minutes and the ability to read music isn't necessary.

Rehearsals are held from 7 to 9:15 p.m. every Tuesday until the show, which is set for 7:30 p.m. Dec. 12 and 13.

Auditions for the 2008 Ypsilanti Township Recreation Department Idol contest are set for 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sept. 13 at the Ypsilanti Township Community Center, 2025 E. Clark.

The contest is divided into two groups — ages 9 to 18 and ages 19 to 99 — and takes place Oct. 4. Audition packets are available at the community center.
